West Bengal Established a Milestone in the History of Organ Transplantation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Another history was created by West Bengal this November. Three young lives were saved by a thirteen years old girl’s kidney, liver and cornea. From Durgapur to Kolkata, a green corridor was created along 170 kms. distance which was one of the rarest incidents in the history of organ transplantation. After crossing many hurdles, the organs of Madhusmita Bayen reached SSKM hospital, Kolkata, where these three patients were awaited for the required organ for transplantation.

Dilip Bayen, father of Madhusmita Bayen, a worker of Mejia Thermal Power Plant in Bankura, previous residence Assam, was staying in Bankura with his family for his job. She was handicapped by birth. Her father poured all his savings for her treatment but in vain. On November 12, night suddenly her condition deteriorated and she was admitted to Bankura Super Speciality Hospital. Observing no improvement doctors referred her to Durgapur Mission Hospital where they declared that she is in coma or a condition called “BRAIN DEATH”.

As the probability of her response to the treatment was nil, doctors requested the girl’s parents to donate her organs. After a long discussion they were finally convinced for the donation. The hospital authority of Durgapur Mission Hospital without delaying for a moment informed the state health department asking if there is any patient. Soon they got response and sent the required organs to SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, where the three patients Abhishek Mishra from Dumdum, Mithun Dalal from Nadia got her kidneys and Sanjit Bala from Barrackpore got her liver transplanted in them.

A group of 10 doctors, from Durgapur Mission Hospital, brought the transplanted organs in ambulance by traveling 170 kms. long green corridor. Generally, kidneys and livers, after getting separated from the body, are viable for 8 hours and 5 hours respectively.

In spite of all these, the organs got transplanted successfully in the patients
and they are improving gradually. The support and assistance from the state and the Kolkata police was quite appreciable.
